Questions about private company valuations

What is the most valuable private company in the world?

Anthropic, at $965 billion after its May 2026 round, just ahead of OpenAI at $852 billion. Anthropic has filed to go public, so OpenAI is likely to take the top spot once Anthropic lists. SpaceX was bigger but went public in June 2026.

How is a private company valued?

There is no share price, so the value comes from the last deal: a funding round, a tender offer or a sale between investors. It is the price per share in that deal times all the shares. It only changes when there is a new deal.

Why do sources give different valuations?

They pick different deals. Some use the last priced round, some a later staff tender or a secondary trade, and some quote the value before the new money and others after it. We show the latest deal we could confirm and say what kind it was.

Can I buy shares in a private company?

Usually not directly. Accredited investors can sometimes buy through secondary platforms or funds, at high minimums and with little information. Most people get exposure through listed investors, such as Alphabet with Waymo or Amazon and Google with Anthropic.
